“For in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give us pause.” Dreams fascinate the mind while the death is beyond this stimulation of senses which vanishes once we open our eyes. It seems to me that dream has been an interested topic of people for ages. And the Hollywood is willing to make movies in whatever topics people interested, including dreams. Here let’s look at some of the popular dream movies.

What Dreams May Come

Strictly speaking this movie is not about dreams. The story in this film came from an old tale book of the same title. It talks about a couple who lost their beloved children in a car crash. The Neurologist Chris played by Robin Williams then died, too. He went to his own afterlife which was a world composed by the artwork of his wife, Annie (Annabella Sciorra). Chris knew that Annie killed herself which would make her stay in despair forever. Chris then travel between heaven and hell to save Annie.

The computer graphic is gorgeous. The film won the Oscar award of special effects. It created an imaginary universe which itself is a delight to watch. The story was quite touching, too. But world view does not compile with what is taught in the Bible. Whoever dies without the Holy Spirit received through the faith of Jesus Christ goes straightly to hell and in there wait for the final judgment and be cast into the lake of fire.

The Cell

Yet another film about serial killer. This film is closer to dream interpretation. A schizoid serial killer was caught by in coma. The FBI tries to save the final victim who was still living and hidden somewhere by the killer. They used a new neurology technology to enter into the killer’s mind. The film then becomes a show of weird and wild visual show of computer graphical imaginations. There is not much to think about but the graphical effects are quite exciting to watch. I personally do not recommend watching too many films about serial killer because it probably does not leave your soul any good effects.

Dreamscape

A classic old film published in 1984. It is still interesting to watch even today. The surreal images in the film would probably leave an impression in your mind, even turns into a dream of your own perhaps.

This is one of the real dream movies which have the whole story closely linked to dreams. It talks about a new scientific project about so called dreamlinking. Dreamlinking is basically to bring someone else into someone’s dream. The purpose of such research was to help people suffering with nightmares, but turn out there was some sort of conspiracy behind, like dream assassins. Lol….

Waking Life

This is a very original movie, both the ideas and the visual elements. The protagonist tries to separates dreams from the reality. The movie takes you through the wild imagination of his mind. The whole movie is in dreams. You may find it quite hard to understand with pieces of information here and there. Exactly like what dream is. The wonderful animations would keep you engaged.

Vanilla Sky

This has to be my favorite dream movies. It was adapted from the thriller Open Your Eyes. You might find it quite hard to understand at some points, but don’t worry, everything would become clear once you open your eyes. Unluckily, I can’t say too much of it, otherwise it loses the point to watch this great dream movie. Watch it.
